What is ‘The New Top 100?’

The New Top 100 is a website that attempts to re-rank the top albums of all time, as put forth by Rolling Stone magazine. This is serious stuff. To us.

We believe the world’s music fans deserve to:
a) have a solid foundation upon which to judge newer music, and
b) be able to find classic music that is brilliant, and will be a source of enjoyment for their entire lives.

Obviously opinions are personal, but we want to act as an informed, experienced listening mentor to the uninitiated. We want you to feel the excitement of discovery, without having to drudge through the endless tomes of recorded product that exist today. We want to take you right to the good stuff.

If we inspire you to dive deeper into a particular artist or genre, that’s great. If we just help you save some money on disappointing music purchases, that’s great, too.

How it Works

We feel that to truly rank a musical work of art, it must be taken in as it was originally intended: the 33 1/3 RPM record. That’s how we listen to each album before we review it, and it’s also where our point system comes from.

*Each album is reviewed by three reviewers, each of whom can grant a possible 33 1/3 points. A perfect score is therefore 99.99.

Yes, it’s gimmicky, but it’s a way to translate our opinions into a spreadsheet. Check out our list of reviewed albums and sort them by score to see what we feel is The True Top 100.

*We have categorically deleted greatest hits packages and a few recordings of lesser fidelity that are ranked by Rolling Stone as we believe they aren’t fair examples of the “album” form.
